Do you ever feel like you need to have a little bit of peace and quiet? Does the world around you seem to get louder and louder?

If you have kids, then the answer is an obvious, “yes.”

Is is possible to get too quiet? Check out this video about the world’s quietest room:

Here’s one quote of the video:

When you go into a really quiet room, your brain starts to turn the gain up, thinking “What’s going on? I need to listen for something here.”

This makes me think about the Bible verse:

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

If we are to listen for the voice of God (not audibly, but in your heart), then we need to get in a quiet place. Some people get away to a camp or some other getaway to get away from the noise and busyness of everyday life. Some just try to get alone in their house.

When we get in a quiet enough place, our heart can “turn up the gain,” listening for the Holy Spirit.

Like in the video, the young man didn’t know what he was getting into. He was looking forward to the quiet. But he soon became uncomfortable, dizzy, and nauseous.

The same thing can happen spiritually. We may think that we want to hear from God, but then when He does speak, we become uncomfortable. We may get disoriented. The lines of truth may become blurred, just as the man’s senses were confused.

Getting to a quiet place to hear from God is a good and necessary thing. Yes, you will probably get uncomfortable and disoriented. But God can also then bring clarity and focus.

What do you think about getting peace and quiet?
